How to Make Fimo Beads

Fimo beads are handmade beads created with polymer clay. This special type of clay, sold under the brand name Fimo, is created from PVC plastic and a plasticizer chemical that keeps the clay moldable and soft until it is cured. Fimo clay is unique in that it can be fired in your home oven and does not need a special kiln.

Instructions

You'll Need

  • Colorful polymer clays
  • Hollow cake tin
  • Varnish
  • Oven
  • Crochet, knitting needle or toothpick
  • Flat tray

1. Get a ball of polymer clay in the color of your choice.

2. Knead the clay with your palm to make it warm and more pliable

3.    Divide it into small balls of equal size. Ensure that the balls are at least the size of a penny.

4.    Take each ball one by one and give each one of them a cylindrical shape using your palm. It should create vein patterns on the beads. In case you are not satisfied with the veining you can re-shape them.

5.    Pass a knitting needle, crocheting needle or even a toothpick through the center of these beads to facilitate threading later.

6.    Hang the beads on a hollow cake tin so that they can dry. This process also helps the beads retain its proper shape.

7.    Bake the beads in the oven in a hanging position at 2650 F or 1300 C. It takes about 30 minutes for the beads to harden.

8.    Cool the beads. Take them out one by one of the needle slowly and carefully and keep them in a flat tray.

9.    Coat the beads with Varnish to protect them.
