The knit side creates a nice smooth surface and you can easily see the knit stitches on the front side or right side  of your work. See all the V's? Those are knit stitches.

When you turn the stocking stitch pattern over you will see all those bumps. This is the purl side. Usually it is the wrong side of your work however it is also called reverse stockinette stitch.
If you are working the reverse stockinette stitch pattern the purl side will actually be on the right side and the wrong side will be the knit side.
